Monitoring fisheries is crucial for understanding species’ trends and behaviors, ensuring sustainable management, and informing conservation efforts. Landings and effort data for various species were obtained from the Scientific, Technical, and Economic Committee for Fisheries of the European Commission. This dataset, available at a gridded spatial resolution, covers the period from 2017 to 2022 for the Mediterranean Sea. In this study, we analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of a single species by developing a spatio-temporal model within the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) framework. By incorporating both spatial and temporal dimensions, our goal is to provide insights into the species’ behavior and improve the understanding of when, where, and how fishing efforts are most effective. These findings can support policymakers and stakeholders in optimizing fishing strategies, minimizing environmental impact, and promoting the long-term sustainability of marine resources.
